What is a Cataract?
Cataract is the clouding of the natural lens in the eye. The lens is normally clear and allows light to pass through, producing a sharp image on the retina. Once the lens becomes cloudy it is more difficult for light to pass through causing blurred vision. A cataract is normally related to age, although it can also be attributed to injury, sun exposure, cigarette smoking, and steroid use.

How to treat a Cataract:
There are two ways to treat a cataract. In the early stages of a cataract, prescription glasses can be given to help you see better. As a cataract progresses prescription glasses may no longer be able to correct vision loss. In this case surgery is the best option to restore vision. The decision to proceed with surgery should be made by you and your Ophthalmologist. The need for cataract surgery depends on the extent of the cataract, as well as how the blurry vision affects your daily activities such as driving, golfing, watching television, reading, sewing or playing cards.
Removing the cataract will allow more light to enter the eye, thereby improving vision. When the cataract is removed it is replaced with a lens implant. This implant has a prescription similar to your prescription glasses. Today's technology gives us more options for lens implants. Our physicians use the most up to date surgical techniques to provide you with the best vision possible. Most patients have a reduced dependency on prescription glasses after cataract surgery, they typically only need to wear reading glasses. Here, at Pasco Eye Institute, our physicians will evaluate your eyes and offer you their professional opinion of the lens options they recommend for you. Together, you will decide what best suites your needs.
